Funding Projects.
Since our first outing in 2006 the Portlaoise Charity Truck Runs & Truck Shows have generated funding in the region of €45,000 for Laois Down Syndrome Association. This funding has & is being used to provide much needed therapies, Services & educational interventions for our children. As you will have heard in the news over the last number of years, Speech & Language therapy for children with disabilities is in short supply due primarily to budget constraints. In 2008 our association made the decision that children had to have this & other therapies in a very early stage of their development which is refered to as early intervention. The funding has allowed us to set up a support facility to provide children with speech, language & occupational therapy on a regular & ongoing basis. With the support of Ballyfin community, that provide us with the hall to work from, children from both Laois Down Syndrome & L.O.F.F.A( laois & Offaly Families for Autism ) can access these therapies on a weekly basis. From the funding we have been able to run a number of seminar days covering areas of health, education, behaviour, counselling with specialist attending from Down syndrome Ireland to advise parents, teachers, special needs assistants, & health care professionals on all of these topics. We have been able to spearhead the introduction of a multi sensory mathematics teaching system called “NUMICON” Into mainstream & special schools in Co. Laois. We have run a number of drama projects in conjunction with students from trinity college Dublin to help children with disabilities develop self confidence. We are currently working on introducing a book reading programme developed by Marie Dunleavey, a mother with a Down Syndrome child from swords in Dublin. We are currently forming a partnership with other disability groups which will see the set up of a dedicated facility that will included woodland walks, picnic areas, play areas & a specially designed structure. Lots more projects are being looked at including sports, exercise & diet programmes.
